Three From Nowhere are back with their new release: Coming Back for More. Offering three new songs recorded live—as they have us used to—the band keeps experimenting and evolving, something we love to see. So, how are these new tracks?

The energetic first track, Three From Nowhere – Live, reminds us of this tradition within rock bands to name a track after themselves—and vice versa. I would dare to say that it’s one of the band’s heaviest songs, with the drums offering the foundational sonic centerpiece of the track. The bass line is equally unstoppable, a true treat to the ears. This feeling of speed gets enhanced as soon as the guitar comes in, bringing a delicious distortion that keeps building on itself as the song goes on. I’d also like to mention how much I enjoy listening to the instruments getting tuned and the band getting ready for a couple of seconds before the song starts, a small, but fun, detail I always appreciate from live recordings.

The second track, No – Live, comes in with great contrast. This ballad-like riff slowly guides the listener, easing the transition into a much slower tune. Suddenly, the voice comes in and… yes! Lyrics in Spanish! The band releases their first song in Spanish with some of their strongest lyrics yet. Hearing them sing in unison, dragging the vocals as the drums strongly point out the end of each verse with this wonderful beat is something else. The guitar solo that comes after is also in point, as we circle back to earlier-heard harmonies that bring this song to an end. In my opinion, one of the most complete songs the band has done by far. Everything comes together and works just right. My favorite track of theirs, I might even say.

Finally, the title track, Do It Yourself – Live. Here we return to the harder sound of the first song, as vocals and instruments hit you all at the same time. The lyrics are a little cocky and funny, kind of Zappa-esque. The guitar riff that comes after that bomb of an intro slows down to, little by little, start picking up again. As it starts communicating with the drums and bass in the way the band usually does, the song turns into something completely different – a sweet spot between the first and the second track. It flows like a skillful jam session that goes on and on until, towards the end, the vocals come back in to tie it all together. I like the attempt to create certain cohesion between the beginning and the end, but both parts feel a little disconnected, and the switch-up too awkward – like two songs existing within the same track, that could shine by themselves but not together.

Ultimately, I think this single is a step forward for the band. Their mastery over their instruments in the live recordings is indisputable. Now listeners wonder what they will create with said mastery. I like their experimentation, the path that they seem to be in sounds good, and I would encourage them to deepen that search. Can’t wait to see what they do next.
